  • Moisture Meter: This is the most reliable tool. A pin-type moisture meter can measure the moisture content of drywall, wood, or other substrates. Readings above 12-16% (depending on material) generally indicate a moisture problem that needs addressing before tiling. A pinless moisture meter can detect moisture beneath the surface without piercing it.
  • Identify Source: If moisture is detected, the absolute first step is to identify and fix the source of the moisture (e.g., leaking pipe, roof leak, condensation, foundation issue). Tiling over the problem won’t make it go away; it will only mask it and lead to larger problems later.

Preparing the wall

Drying or sealing substrate

  • Drying: Once the moisture source is fixed, allow the wall to dry out completely. This may involve using fans, dehumidifiers, or even professional drying equipment. This can take days or weeks.
  • Sealing (After Drying): For porous surfaces or if there’s any concern about lingering minor moisture (after the source is fixed and the wall is dry), applying a waterproof sealer or primer can provide an extra layer of protection and improve adhesion.   • For Drywall/Backer Board: Generally, these surfaces don’t need scoring if they are clean and prepped correctly. However, ensuring they are dust-free is crucial.

Waterproof mastic when permitted

  • Limited Use: Mastic (pre-mixed organic adhesive) can be used for tiling walls in areas with limited moisture exposure (e.g., kitchen backsplashes, areas outside the direct shower spray).
